Career
Xi became an official party member and started serving as a branch secretary in 1974. He attended Beijing’s Tsinghua University in chemical engineering the following year. After his graduation in 1979, he worked with Geng Biao for three years. Geng Biao was then the vice-premier and minister of national defense in the central Chinese government.
Xi quit his current job in 1982 and decided to leave Beijing and work as a deputy secretary for the CCP in Hebei province. In 1985, he changed his job where he was appointed a party committee member and a vice mayor of Xiamen (Amoy) in Fujian province. By 1995 he had ascended to the post of deputy provincial party secretary.
In 1999, he worked his way up, becoming governor the following year. He held both the deputy secretarial and governing posts until 2002 as Fujian’s head was environmental conservation and cooperation with nearby Taiwan. That year marked his initiative to Zhejiang province, serving as acting governor and, from 2003, party secretary.
