“Kids” was the first project of Harmony Korine where he cast Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny. It was a low-budget independent film about Manhattan teenagers life who were into drugs and unprotected sex during the AIDS catastrophe. It earned both negative and positive reviews and was later known as a cult film. Soon after this movie, Korine received funds to produce Gummo. However, mainstream critics rejected this film.

In 1998, he produced The Diary of Anne Frank Pt II. It had a few disturbing scenes and the jury board and critics were quite annoyed seeing this. Thereby rejected it straight after.
