In 1986, Van Rossum came up with and wrote a glob() routine, a wildcard system to sort and use files by extension for BSD Unix, while being an employee at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). He also helped to develop the ABC programming language. Not only did he create a web browser called Grail, written in Python, but also contributed to the HTML standard.

In 1989, December, Van wanted to pursue a hobby in the programming project that would keep him busy during the Christmas week. That was the time when he started to write an Interpreter for creating a new script language which he had been thinking about for quite some time. He named this interpreter Python, inspired by Monty Python’s Flying Circus. He was generally known as a Benevolent Dictator For Life inside the Python community. It means, he supervised the development process of Python and make decisions where required.

However, in July 2018, he resigned from this position. But he stayed as a member of the Python Steering Council until the end of 2019 and he pulled out his name for the 2020 election from nomination.

Van Rossum headed multiple research institutes, along with the Netherland’s Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI). He resigned from CNRL in May 2000 to work for BeOpen.com, which eventually collapsed in October of the same year. From 2000 to 2003, he worked in Zope Corporation. From 2005 to 2012, he worked for Google. 

In 2013, Van began working at Dropbox, a cloud file storage. He worked there for almost 5 years and in October 2019, he officially announced his retirement. Despite announcing his retirement publically, Microsoft offered him the position of Developer Division with a handsome salary, that’s why on 12 November 2020, he joined Microsoft and still working there.
